April NMF Meeting

Our April meeting went really well! We gathered at Crystal's house to view "The Business of Being Born" documentary. We also enjoyed drinks and appetizers while discussing the film. It was so interesting to hear everyone's personal birth stories and opinions. It was wonderful how everyone respected each member's personal belief system.

All of our meetings present information in some form. We appreciate that everyone remains open minded. We all walked away with a new perspective on the birthing process. It was enlightening and intriguing. To sum it up, Amy so eloquently said, "we each have our own story with the same wonderful result!"

Thank you to all of the members that brought gently used magazines for our gift swap! A big thank you to Nicole who was so thoughtful to think of our husbands while selecting her magazines for the swap! :)

We also collected several travel size toiletries for First Step. Thank you for being so thoughtful in your donations.

Crystal was a wonderful host!! Thank you for opening up your beautiful home to our group!

Food For Thought

http://freerangekids.wordpress.com/

From Kelly:
This website was started by a mom as a counterpoint to the prevaling wisdom that the world is scary and kids and pre teens shouldn't be allowed to do much (if anything) unsupervised. I'm not sure how I'll be as a "big kid" mom but I tend to lean more toward letting kids learn how to safely navigate their world as opposed to trying to protect them from EVERYTHING, which doesn't allow them to learn good coping skills or independent decision making. I'm sure it's a hard balance, but this site is a reminder that not every stranger is a child molester in waiting and not every kid who is allowed to run around outside drowns. In today's 24-7 horrible news on TV world, it's a good reminder I think.

Kid's Activities!

(submitted by Kelly)

This is a Plymouth/Canton/Northville area playgroup with a website where you can join activities with your kids--they have something going almost every day of the week! It's a great "master calendar" of all the local story times, park outings, open swims, and kids activities in our area, and you can find someone to meet there if you want! Follow the links to join to get on their email list (be sure to request the daily digest so you only get one email a day, instead of sometimes 10 or more)

Educational NMF Outing!

Several NMF members went to a seminar this weekend presented by A Touch Of Life Chiropractors. Mary Tocco was the main speaker. She was outstanding!!!!

The seminar covered a few of the following topics:

1) Vaccines: Mary Tocco gave a detailed presentation on what is in vaccines, how they are manufactured and the risks involved with various shots. She provided websites for further information- http://www.momvaccines.org/, http://www.childhoodshots.com/, http://www.novaccine.com/.

2) Mary also talked about how you can provide the best possible environment for your child. Some suggestions she had were to buy organic food, get the toxins out of your home (cleaning products,) detox your family, be informed and cautious when it comes to vaccinating, breastfeed your babies, consider non-traumatic births, consider being seen by chiropractors, consider using a holistic approach to treating illness vs. being so quick to medicate, etc., etc.

3) Mary talked about treating illness with a holistic approach. For example-

-Pink Eye, put one drop of honey in the infected eye
-Rashes, Use chamomile or take an oatmeal bath
-Gas, Apple cider vinegar
-Cuts & Scratches, witch hazel
-Coughing, honey and lemon juice

4) Mary gave lots of interesting statistics on vaccines. For example:

1950: children got 3 shots at the age of 5
1983: 10 vaccines
2002: 23 vaccines
2007: 36 vaccines!!!

Please know this isn't a word for word recap of the seminar, just a simple overview. There will be some handouts provided for all members who attend the April NMF meeting. If you would like more info., you can contact Maria, Nicole, Christine or Danielle.

FYI) Mary will be coming back to the area in September for another seminar if you are interested.

REMINDER: This Thursday is our April NMF meeting. We will be watching "The Business of Being Born" documentary and be discussing it. By the way, Mary couldn't say enough wonderful things about this film! :) Also, we are going to be doing some spring cleaning! For our gift swap, be sure to bring some old magazines that other NMF members might enjoy reading. We are also collecting travel size toiletries for First Step Women's Shelter. There will be a $5.00 meeting fee for this gathering so be sure to bring cash. Check the evite for more details! :)

How To Say No (Without Saying No)

(submitted by Jodi)

Quote from article:

"The average toddler hears the word no an astonishing 400 times a day, according to experts. That's not only tiresome for you but it can also be harmful to your child: According to studies, kids who hear no too much have poorer language skills than children whose parents offer more positive feedback."

Tracing Autism

(submitted by Kim)

Quote from article:

"Despite the fact that one major study after another has answered no since the issue came to the fore around 2000, 54% of parents of autistic children in a 2006 survey said the answer is yes. In fact, the parents named vaccines more frequently than any other suspected cause."
