(Keep in mind, these are simply suggestions and we are not asking that you bring one from each category. Contribute as much as you wish! )
1. Gift Swap-Do you have a gift at home that someone else might find more useful? Bring it for our gift swap!
2. Pay It Forward-Have you read a really great article recently or any form of information that you would like to share with the group? If so, bring 20 copies to share at our next meeting!

Our best plan is Magna/Aqua/Glo-doodles combined w/ a stockpile of her favorite music - last Christmas was Mamma Mia, this year Taylor Swift :) That, and trying to plan travel during naptime. We actually make the 2.5 hr. trip to grandma&grandpa's about once/month and for that "short" time I'm glad not to have a DVD player. It's the only time my kid will sit still and talk to us, and we have some pretty funny conversations. For lengthier trips I can see why it would be nice to break things up though. No advice for babies --I feel so bad for them stuck in one spot and rear-facing so they can't even see you (although that bundle-me does seem quite cozy!)
oh, and as far as flying goes, I would just recommend that you have a sling/baby carrier etc for any infants...I didn't know the first time I flew that I'd have to fold up the stroller and put it on the security conveyor - not a great spur of the moment surprise! Also, change any diapers as close to boarding as possible because it's a real pain to do it in the airplane bathroom.
When we fly, we pack a carry-on for Gavin filled w/some known favorite toys and a few brand new suprises to keep him entertained. The trip to Texas is an all-day affair so last Christmas we bought Gavin a Leapster video game system and that kept him very entertained on the flights. I agree w/Christina- I am so glad we opted not to have the DVD player in our car- we have great car conversations w/Gavin and when we travel by car for long distances up north, we download a movie or two onto our iTouch and let him watch those then. Oh- I highly recommend paying for a plane ticked for your baby, even if they can fly free on your lap- the extra space and seat is such a nice luxury to have. We've always paid for the seat, and I would never do it any other way! And another thing that works like a charm- a kid-sized travel pillow (the kind that wrap around your neck). Gavin always falls asleep with it on, whether in the car or on a plane :)
Great tips! I'll be traveling with both kids, come April so I'll need as much advice as I can get.
We try not to travel too much--taken one plane trip (to Illinois) and one long car ride (Chicago) in three years. And we're set for a while...too much stress and trouble for what it's worth.
We dont' have or want a DVD in car either, we have a portable and it kept her awake (til 11 p.m.!) on our trip to Chicago.
Just got back from FL drive with a 4 year old and 1 year old. DVD's, coloring books, kids laptops all kept them in great moods the whole trip. You can bring a DVD on a plane too!
